Australia and California sign new partnership on climate and clean energy
The Australian and Californian governments have agreed to work together to address climate change and support clean energy transition.
Ambassador Kevin Rudd and Governor Gavin Newsom signed a joint statement in Sacramento on Tuesday 15 August 2023 Pacific Standard Time. Australian Los Angeles Consul-General Jane Duke and Wade Crowfoot, Secretary of Natural Resources, California signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that outlines cooperation for the next five years.
Through the MOU both governments will cooperate on a range of work including
- clean energy
- clean transportation
- clean technologies
- nature-based solutions
- adaptation
- green finance and investment
- circular economy
- research and development
- advancing vehicle efficiency standards, and
- decarbonising the aviation industry.
The agreement also recognises the vital role of Indigenous knowledge in helping to manage the environment.
The MOU will add to the strong relationship between Australia and California. Both countries are prone to similar severe weather events and disasters such as wildfires, drought and flooding. Both countries also face similar challenges such as protecting a unique natural heritage.
Through the MOU Australia and California will collaborate on policy, work together on projects and encourage public-private partnerships. The collaboration will also facilitate the exchange of scientific knowledge and technical expertise.
Australia’s partnership with California follows leaders-level announcement of the federal Climate, Critical Minerals and Clean Energy Transformation Compact in May 2023.
