The City of Newcastle has announced its new Empowering Climate Champions program, designed to give community members the skills and knowledge to contribute to the city’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2040. This initiative is part of the broader Empowering Newcastle community climate action program.

Applications for the program are now open and close on 19 January 2025. Participants will begin the six-week training course in March 2025, with sessions held every Thursday evening from 6 pm to 8 pm at the City of Newcastle’s office at 12 Stewart Avenue, Newcastle West.

What the Program Offers

The program will provide practical training on developing community-led projects that promote renewable energy, electrification, and energy efficiency. Inspired by work from Saul Griffiths and Rewiring Australia, the sessions will feature expert facilitators from leading climate organisations across the country. Participants will gain skills in:

  • Designing and delivering local climate projects.
  • Communicating effectively about climate action.
  • Understanding renewable energy, energy efficiency, and electrification technologies.
  • Leading and organising community groups for climate-focused initiatives.

The program aims to empower participants to create projects suited to Newcastle’s local challenges. Projects can range from individual efforts to group initiatives, and participants are not required to have a specific project idea when applying.

Who Can Apply

Eligibility criteria include being over 15 years of age and living, working, studying, or being involved in community organisations in the Newcastle Local Government Area. While space is limited, priority will be given to Newcastle residents if demand exceeds capacity. Applicants must be able to attend all six sessions, as the program is in-person only and sessions will not be recorded.

What to Expect

The program will cover the following topics:

  • Week 1: Community-led climate action.
  • Week 2: Energy equity and community impact.
  • Week 3: Creating efficient, all-electric homes.
  • Week 4: Renewable energy solutions, including solar, batteries, and electric vehicles.
  • Week 5: Leading change and fostering community engagement.
  • Week 6: Reflection, celebration, and project sharing.

Support for Participants

Participants will receive guidance to develop their projects and have the chance to connect with others through a growing network of Climate Champions. The program also aligns with the City of Newcastle’s next round of community sustainability grants, giving participants an opportunity to secure funding for their projects.

How to Apply

Applications are open to individuals or groups, but each person must submit a separate application to ensure fair access. Even those without a clear project idea are encouraged to apply, as ideas will be workshopped during the program.

This initiative is open to all, with applications particularly welcomed from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
