The Federal Government is developing a National Energy Workforce Strategy to ensure Australia's energy sector is equipped to reach net zero emissions by 2050. This goal will require a significant transformation of our energy system, with a focus on renewable energy and new industries.

As part of this process, the government is seeking feedback from the community and industry stakeholders through the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water on how to address key challenges facing the energy workforce. This is your chance to have a say in shaping the future of Australia's energy sector.

The consultation is open until 31 August 2024 and covers a range of topics, including:

  • attracting and retaining workers in the energy sector
  • improving the way we collect, use, and share workforce data to inform decision-making
  • enhancing coordination across industry, federal government, and state and territory governments

The government is also consulting with all levels of government and industry to ensure the strategy meets the needs of the energy sector. This includes considering the skills and capabilities required to design, build, operate, and maintain new and existing energy infrastructure.

The strategy will build on existing research, including The Clean Energy Generation study, which identified current and future skills gaps in the energy sector. It will also consider issues such as:

  • Government coordination on energy workforce issues
  • Energy workforce data gaps
  • Skills shortages
  • Attraction, retention, development, and redeployment of workers
  • Training and development in current and emerging occupations
  • Skilled migration to meet energy workforce needs
  • Workforce supply and demand
  • Improved industry and worker engagement
  • Regional workforce needs and challenges
  • Diversity and inclusion

This is a unique opportunity to provide feedback. Submit your feedback by 31 August 2024 and help shape the future of Australia's energy workforce.
