Australian clean energy start-up, DeCarice, is tackling emissions from diesel engines by offering a retrofitting service that converts them into hydrogen-diesel hybrids. Co-founded by Goran Bozic and Professor Shawn Kook, the company targets industries like mining, construction, ports, and agriculture, where diesel engines contribute heavily to greenhouse gas emissions.

The patented Hydrogen-Diesel Direct Injection Dual-Fuel System developed by Professor Kook and his team at the UNSW Engine Research Laboratory enables engines to operate using 90% green hydrogen and 10% diesel. The system retains the flexibility to run on diesel when needed, avoiding the need for costly replacement of existing equipment.

Professor Kook said the innovation has achieved "a 77% reduction in CO2 emissions while maintaining the same efficiency, power and performance," adding that it demonstrates the potential for immediate and practical emissions reduction in heavy industries.

DeCarice’s retrofitting technology offers industries a way to cut emissions while extending the life of existing assets, such as trucks, power generators, and mining equipment. By using green hydrogen from renewable energy sources like wind and solar, the system provides a cleaner fuel option that supports Australia's energy transition goals.

The Australian market for diesel-only power generators, worth an estimated $765 million, represents a strong entry point for this technology. DeCarice is also exploring opportunities to establish local manufacturing capabilities, further contributing to the clean energy supply chain in Australia.

The founders are optimistic about the future, with plans to expand the technology’s reach and impact.

"We’ve been supported by so many wonderful people and we’re really looking forward to what happens next. We are full of energy and ready to take any challenges,” said Professor Kook.
