Newcastle Airport leads the nation with new standard in sustainable aviation
Newcastle Airport has achieved ACA Level 4+ Transition, recognising its commitment to renewable energy, emissions reduction, and sustainable development, placing it among the world's leading eco-friendly airports.
Newcastle Airport has become the first in Australia to achieve Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Level 4+ Transition, a recognition granted by Airports Council International (ACI). This accreditation acknowledges the airport’s progress in managing and reducing carbon emissions, making it part of an elite 12 percent of airports globally with such credentials.
Interim CEO Andrew Warrender explained, “Level 4+ recognises that we are truly transitioning away from carbon reliance and embedding sustainability into our long-term future. It shows we’re not just paying lip service; we’re serious about making real, lasting changes that align with the Australian Government’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.”
Path to ACA Level 4+
Newcastle Airport’s achievement reflects years of effort and targeted actions. In 2024, the airport reached Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions, six years ahead of its 2030 target.
Key initiatives included switching entirely to renewable energy through a partnership with leading Australian renewable energy retailer FlowPower and offsetting residual Scope 1 and corporate travel emissions through native bushland regeneration projects in New South Wales.
Other achievements contributing to the ACA 4+ Transition status include:
- Green infrastructure development: The new international terminal received a 5-Star Green Star ‘Designed’ assessment, and Astra Aerolab buildings target similar high sustainability ratings.
- Solar power generation: A premium carpark roof equipped with 1,236 solar panels was built to meet a substantial portion of the airport’s energy needs.
- Sustainable financing: A $235 million CommBank Green Sustainability Linked Loan supports ongoing projects tied to specific environmental goals.
- EV support: The airport installed electric vehicle charging bays to encourage sustainable transport options for passengers.
Newcastle Airport collaborated with local organisations, including Tarambo Environmental Services, which assisted in calculating its carbon footprint and navigating the ACA process.
Broader Sustainability Efforts
The airport also contributes to the Hunter Region’s transition to clean energy, supporting projects like the Hydrogen Hub in Newcastle and the Port of Newcastle’s Clean Energy Precinct. These initiatives align with the region’s growing reputation as a hub for renewable energy innovation and production.
“As a leader in efficient carbon management, Newcastle Airport exemplifies a strong commitment to sustainability and aligns with our industry’s collective goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050," ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East Director General Stefano Baronci said.
Looking Ahead
Newcastle Airport Chair Jude Munro AO described ACA Level 4+ Transition as a reflection of the airport’s leadership in sustainable aviation. “We’re leading the region as climate champions and pioneering a sustainable blueprint for Australia’s aviation future. We are committed to continuous improvement and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainable aviation,” she said.
By maintaining sustainability at the core of its operations and development, Newcastle Airport aims to remain a key player in reducing the aviation industry’s environmental impact while continuing to serve as a vital gateway to the Hunter Region and beyond.
