Pacific Energy acquires Canberra Hydrogen Refuelling Facility
The operational transition of the facility from ActewAGL to Pacific Energy signals a new era in hydrogen infrastructure ownership and operation.
Pacific Energy has secured ownership of the Canberra Hydrogen Refuelling Facility from ActewAGL, marking its inaugural investment in hydrogen infrastructure. Situated in Fyshwick, this facility was Australia's first publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling station, inaugurated back in 2021.
Since its inception, the Canberra Hydrogen Refuelling Facility has been instrumental in catalysing the region's transition towards hydrogen mobility. It has serviced an expanding fleet of hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), with the ACT Government emerging as its largest fleet operator.
Hyundai and Toyota, manufacturers of FCEVs like the NEXO and the Mirai respectively, have also utilised the station.
With their existing robust track record in sustainable distributed energy solutions, this acquisition aligns perfectly with Pacific Energy's overarching strategy as the company pursues it build-own-operate model across multiple fuel technologies.
“With our already established reputation and track record of delivering broad-based hydrogen solutions, the acquisition of the Canberra Hydrogen Refuelling Facility perfectly aligns with our goal to be a leading provider of the infrastructure the sector is seeking to scale," said Pacific Energy’s CEO, Jamie Cullen.
“Combined with our commitment to support the ACT Government to decarbonise its transport sector, we look forward to supporting local organisations refuel their vehicles while considering new opportunities to grow the Territory’s FCEV fleet options,” he said.
Pacific Energy's investment signifies a collaborative effort towards sustainable energy solutions with industry partners as well as government. Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hyundai, Toyota, and Ampol, the company aims to focus expertise in developing hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, further consolidating its commitment to driving the clean energy transition.
