Volgren produces locally made hydrogen-powered bus in collaboration with Wrightbus
Volgren has completed its first hydrogen-powered bus with a second in production, marking a key step in integrating hydrogen fuel technology into Australian transport.
Volgren, Australia’s largest bus body manufacturer, has made a key advancement in sustainable transport with the construction of its first hydrogen-powered bus, developed in collaboration with Wrightbus. A second hydrogen bus is already being built and will be delivered in the coming months. This expansion adds to Volgren’s Zero Emission Bus portfolio, which now includes over 150 buses across six battery-electric and fuel-cell variants.
The project marks the first time Wrightbus’ advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology has been incorporated into locally manufactured buses in Australia. Wrightbus, recognised for developing the world’s first hydrogen-powered double-decker bus, has supplied the hydrogen fuel cell chassis for Volgren’s vehicles. This partnership allows Volgren to adopt cutting-edge global technology while tailoring it to meet Australia’s public transport needs.
Volgren’s CEO, Thiago Deiro, noted the project’s benefits to both local manufacturing and sustainability: “We are incredibly proud to lead the way in zero-emission transport solutions here in Australia. The development of this hydrogen-powered bus, in partnership with Wrightbus, showcases how our focus on innovation can contribute to more sustainable public transport systems.” He also stressed that local manufacturing and collaboration were key factors in the project’s success, adding that it “demonstrates the strength of Australia’s local manufacturing sector and the value of collaboration.”
For Wrightbus, this partnership marks its first venture into the Australian market. CEO Jean-Marc Gales said, “This is a significant partnership for Wrightbus as it’s the first time we’ve exported our powertrain technology to a bus body manufacturer and it’s the first time we’ve entered the Australian market.”
By bringing hydrogen-powered buses to Australia, Volgren continues its role in advancing zero-emission transport solutions, contributing to both environmental sustainability and local economic development. With hydrogen becoming a more prominent fuel source for decarbonising transport, this project exemplifies the benefits of integrating global expertise with local manufacturing, helping pave the way for cleaner public transport options across Australia.
